¿ASI SON LOS HOMBRES?

directed by Klaudia Reynicke

"Distance is an interior dimension." Such is the finding that the director makes through her self-reflective account, which crosses Peru, the United States and Switzerland. The path taken by the women in her family in liberating themselves from the patriarchal model transmitted from generation to generation is a long one. Her own course is meandering, tossed between two sides of the Atlantic, from one culture to another.

Some old VHS cassettes serve as reference points: " I was measuring the gad between the world I grew up in and the woman I have become over the course of my migratory movements" (KR).

Here introspection involves dialogue and a series of charming conversations, finely dramatized, with her mother, aunt, grandmother and niece. And it is, quite naturally, in humor and closeness - to the bodies, to the frame -  that the filmmaker finds the right distance.

A gentle yet profound film, with Latin panache, a delight documentary soap in which the voice of women frees itself in the absence of men, but in which men are the focus of every discussion.

ALESSIA BOTTANI - Visions du réel catalogue 2013

Four women and a girl, four generations, three cultures, several marriages, a patriarch and a few VHS tapes.

In 1986, at the age of ten, Klaudia leaves her native country, Peru, to settle in Switzerland along with her mother. From that point, their family in Peru starts filming the life that Klaudia and Margot can no longer see. Klaudia and her mother do the same from Switzerland. The tape correspondence lasts four years.

About twenty-five years after having left her country of origin, Klaudia finds the VHS tapes of her childhood. By watching the tapes as an adult, it makes her wonder:

What is behind the image of family unity and what had been the price to pay for the women of this patriarchal family who had to maintain the role of good wives and good mothers?

To try to answer these questions, Klaudia decides to investigate with the women of her family in Florida. She meets her mother Margot, aunt Cecy, her grandmother Nelly, and her niece Mia. Through stories of past and present, Klaudia gradually discovers the difference between the world where she grew up and the woman that she has become.
